Based in Wollongong, the Illawarra Steelers represented the Illawarra region in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) pathways competition, bringing top-flight Rugby League to a passionate and growing community.

Known for their scarlet jerseys and hard footballers, the Steelers became a symbol of pride for the Illawarra region. Their home ground, WIN Stadium, is one of the most picturesque venues with breathtaking coastal views in the heart of the city.

The Steelers have been instrumental in developing Rugby League talent, with the Illawarra region producing many of the game’s greatest players, including Paul McGregor, Rod Wishart, John Cross, Ryan Girdler and Shaun Timmins.

In 1999, the Steelers merged with the St. George Dragons to form the St. George Illawarra Dragons, combining the strengths of both clubs. The Steelers name still lives on however, competing in the NSWRL Pathways competitions in SG Ball, Harold Matthews Cup, Tarsha Gale Cup and Lisa Fiaola Cup.
